Description.

  • Type: Epiphytic orchid (grows on trees, not in soil)

  • Origin: Native to the Philippines

  • Appearance:

    • Leaves: Thick, leathery, strap-like, and bright green. They grow in a fan shape from a short stem.

    • Flowers: Small, star-shaped, and usually purple to violet, sometimes with a darker lip. They are fragrant and grow in clusters from long, upright inflorescences.

    • Size: Plants are compact compared to some other Vanda species, making them suitable for hanging baskets or mounted displays.

  • Growth habit: Vanda barnesii has a monopodial growth pattern, meaning it grows upward from a single stem rather than producing pseudobulbs. It tends to grow in warm, humid conditions with good air circulation.

Care Guide

1. Light:

  • Requires bright, indirect light.

  • Can tolerate some direct morning sun but avoid harsh midday sun, which can burn the leaves.

  • A south- or east-facing window is ideal if grown indoors.

2. Temperature:

  • Day: 75–85°F (24–29°C)

  • Night: 60–70°F (15–21°C)

  • Can tolerate short periods of cooler temperatures but not frost.

3. Humidity:

  • Prefers 60–80% humidity.

  • Mist leaves daily or use a humidity tray if indoor air is dry.

  • Good air circulation is essential to prevent fungal and bacterial diseases.

4. Watering:

  • Water thoroughly, allowing roots to dry slightly between waterings.

  • In summer, water more frequently (2–3 times per week), less in winter.

  • Avoid letting the roots sit in water, as this can cause root rot.

5. Fertilizer:

  • Use a balanced orchid fertilizer (20-20-20) diluted to ½ strength, applied every 1–2 weeks during the growing season.

  • Reduce fertilization during winter or slow growth periods.

6. Mounting/Potting:

  • Can be grown in hanging baskets, mounted on slabs, or in pots with coarse media (like bark or charcoal) to allow excellent drainage.

  • Ensure roots have space and air circulation.

7. Flowering:

  • Blooms are produced on upright spikes, often in spring or summer.

  • Flowers can last 2–3 weeks under proper conditions.

How long will it take to recieve my order?

We always choose overnight or express shipping options. Once shipped, most orders arrive in 1-2 days in Canada and the USA. Depending on your location, shipping might take longer. Occassionally, customs clearance might take an additional day.

Do I recieve a tracking number?

A tracking number will be emailed to you once your order has shipped. You can also find your order and tracking information under your account.

Returned plants are subject to a 10% restocking fee, due to the recovery care needed for returned plants, and shipping/permit costs are nonrefundable. Customers are responsible for return shipping costs as well as all paperwork required to ship back to Canada (e.g. phytosanitary certificates).
