Trisetella fissidens is a miniature orchid species described by Luer & Hirtz in 1989 . It belongs to the genus Trisetella, which is part of the orchid family and is native to Central and South America, with many species endemic to Ecuador . The genus is known for its small flowers, often with fused sepals and petals, and distinctive hair-like tails on the sepals .

Description

  • Growth Habit: Miniature epiphyte, typically found in humid, montane forests.
  • Flowers: Like other Trisetella species, T. fissidens produces small, intricate flowers. The genus name refers to the "three little bristles"—hair-like tails on the sepals . In most species, the lateral sepals are fused into a synsepal, giving the flowers a unique appearance .
  • Habitat: Most commonly found in the Andes, particularly in Ecuador, where many Trisetella species are endemic.

Cultivation Tips

  • Light: Prefers low to moderate, filtered light.
  • Temperature: Cool to intermediate conditions, reflecting its cloud forest origins.
  • Humidity: High humidity is essential.
  • Water: Keep the medium moist but well-drained; do not allow to dry out completely.

Summary

Trisetella fissidens is a charming, miniature orchid from the Andes, prized for its delicate, bristle-tailed flowers and compact growth. It is best suited for growers who can provide cool, humid conditions similar to its native cloud forest habitat.
