The String of Hearts (Ceropegia woodii), also known as Rosary Vine or Chain of Hearts, is a trailing succulent vine cherished for its delicate, heart-shaped leaves and slender stems. Native to South Africa, this plant is popular among indoor gardeners for its unique appearance and relatively low maintenance requirements.

Key Characteristics:

  • Foliage: The plant features small, heart-shaped leaves that are typically dark green with silver variegation on the upper surface and a purplish hue on the underside. The leaves grow in pairs along thin, trailing stems that can extend several feet, making it ideal for hanging baskets or cascading over shelves.

  • Flowers: During its blooming period, the String of Hearts produces small, tubular, pale magenta flowers with a bulbous base, resembling a miniature lantern. While not particularly showy, these flowers add to the plant's charm.

Cultivation and Care:

  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. While it can tolerate some direct sunlight, especially in the morning, excessive direct sun can scorch the leaves. Insufficient light may cause the plant to become leggy and reduce leaf coloration.

  • Watering: Allow the soil to dry out between waterings. Overwatering can lead to root rot, so it's essential to ensure proper drainage. During the growing season (spring and summer), water moderately; reduce watering in the fall and winter months.

  • Humidity: Adapts well to average household humidity levels but appreciates occasional misting, especially in dry environments.

  • Temperature: Thrives in temperatures between 60°F to 80°F (15°C to 27°C). Protect from drafts and sudden temperature changes.

  • Soil: Requires well-draining soil. A cactus or succulent potting mix is suitable, or a combination of regular potting soil with added perlite or coarse sand to improve drainage.
