The String of Pearls (Curio rowleyanus, formerly Senecio rowleyanus) is a distinctive succulent known for its trailing stems adorned with spherical, bead-like leaves. This unique appearance makes it a popular choice for hanging baskets and indoor plant displays.

Key Characteristics:

  • Foliage: Features slender, cascading stems lined with small, round, pea-shaped leaves that store water, giving the plant its characteristic "string of pearls" look. These leaves have a translucent strip, known as an "epidermal window," which allows light to penetrate and aids in photosynthesis.

  • Growth Habit: A fast-growing, trailing succulent that can extend several feet, making it ideal for hanging planters where its stems can cascade gracefully.

Care Requirements:

  • Light: Thrives in bright, indirect light. While it can tolerate some direct sunlight, especially in the morning, excessive direct light can scorch the leaves. Insufficient light may cause the plant to become leggy.

  • Watering: Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Overwatering can lead to root rot. During the growing season (spring and summer), water approximately once every two weeks; reduce frequency during the dormant winter months.

  • Soil: Requires well-draining soil, such as a cactus or succulent mix. Adding perlite or coarse sand can improve drainage.

  • Temperature: Prefers temperatures between 70°F to 80°F (21°C to 27°C) during the growing season. It can tolerate cooler temperatures down to 50°F (10°C) but is not frost-hardy.

  • Humidity: Adaptable to average household humidity levels. However, it prefers a drier environment and does not require additional humidity.
