Selaginella kraussiana, commonly known as Spikemoss, Krauss' Spikemoss, or Clubmoss, is a creeping groundcover plant native to South Africa. Although it resembles moss due to its fine, feathery foliage, it is not a true moss but a member of the Selaginellaceae family. It is prized for its lush, vibrant green foliage and ability to thrive in shaded, high-humidity environments.

Key Features:

1. Foliage: Dense, finely textured, and fern-like, with small, scale-like leaves. It spreads rapidly, forming a soft, mossy mat.

2. Growth Habit: Creeping or trailing, making it an excellent choice for groundcover, terrariums, or as an indoor plant in hanging baskets or pots.

3. Size: Grows to about 2-5 cm (1-2 inches) in height but spreads extensively, covering the ground or container surface.

Care Tips:

1. Light: Thrives in low to moderate indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch its delicate foliage.

2. Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. It requires frequent watering and prefers evenly moist conditions.

3. Humidity: Requires high humidity (above 50%). Mist regularly, use a pebble tray with water, or place it in a terrarium to maintain optimal humidity.

4. Temperature: Prefers warm temperatures between 18-24°C (65-75°F). Protect it from cold drafts and temperatures below 10°C (50°F).

5. Soil: Grows best in rich, well-draining soil. A mix of peat moss, perlite, and potting soil provides the moisture retention and drainage it needs.

6. Fertilizer: Feed with a diluted liquid fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer).

7. Pruning: Trim back overgrown or brown areas to encourage healthy growth and maintain its compact, bushy appearance.

Additional Notes:

Propagation: Propagates easily through division or stem cuttings. Simply separate a portion of the plant and replant in moist soil.

Terrarium-Friendly: Ideal for terrariums due to its love of high humidity and compact growth.

Pests: Rarely affected by pests but may occasionally attract fungus gnats in overly wet conditions. Proper soil drainage helps prevent issues.

Versatility: Can be used as groundcover in shaded gardens, a filler plant in mixed pots, or a decorative indoor plant.

Selaginella kraussiana is a charming and versatile plant that brings a soft, moss-like aesthetic to any environment. Its low-maintenance nature and lush appearance make it an excellent choice for beginners and plant enthusiasts alike.
