Plumeria, commonly known as frangipani or Hawaiian lei flower, is a genus of flowering plants in the dogbane family (Apocynaceae). Native to tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas, including Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean, plumerias are celebrated for their vibrant, fragrant flowers and are often associated with tropical landscapes.

Key Characteristics:

  • Foliage: Plumeria plants have large, leathery, elongated leaves that cluster at the ends of thick, succulent branches. The leaves are typically glossy green and can vary in size depending on the species.

  • Flowers: The star-shaped flowers are renowned for their strong, sweet fragrance and come in a variety of colors, including white, yellow, pink, red, and multicolored combinations. Each flower has five petals and is often used in making leis in Hawaiian culture.

Cultivation and Care:

  • Climate: Plumerias thrive in USDA Hardiness Zones 10-12, where temperatures remain above 40°F (4°C). In cooler climates, they can be grown in containers and brought indoors during colder months.

  • Light: These plants require full sun to partial shade, with at least six hours of direct sunlight daily to promote healthy growth and abundant flowering.

  • Soil: Plumerias prefer well-draining soil. A mix of loamy or sandy soil with good drainage is ideal. When planting in containers, use a cactus or succulent potting mix.

  • Watering: During the active growing season (spring and summer), water plumerias deeply but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings. Reduce watering in the fall and cease during winter dormancy.

  • Fertilization: Apply a high-phosphorus fertilizer (e.g., 10-30-10) every 2-3 weeks during the growing season to encourage blooming. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers, as they promote foliage growth over flowers.

  • Pruning: Prune in late winter or early spring to remove dead or damaged branches and to shape the plant. Pruning encourages branching and can lead to more flower production.
