The Philodendron Gigas is a rare and stunning tropical plant, highly prized for its large, velvety leaves and climbing growth habit. Native to Panama and first described in 1997, this species is a hemiepiphyte, meaning it can grow both from the ground up or send roots down from a tree branch. Its dark, lustrous foliage and ability to grow to enormous sizes make it a favorite among plant collectors and enthusiasts. Often compared to the Philodendron melanochrysum, the Gigas stands out with its unique coloration and texture.

Plant Characteristics

  • Foliage: The Philodendron Gigas features large, velvety leaves that are olive green to dark green in color. New leaves emerge with an orange hue before maturing to their signature deep green shade. In its natural habitat, the leaves can grow up to 4 feet long, though in indoor settings, they typically reach smaller but still impressive sizes.
  • Growth Habit: This plant is a climbing species that thrives when provided with a moss pole or other support structure. Its hemiepiphytic nature allows it to grow either as a ground climber or as an aerial plant, sending roots down from higher elevations.
  • Texture: The leaves have a velvety texture, adding a luxurious feel to its appearance. This texture, combined with its deep coloration, makes it a standout in any plant collection.
  • Rarity: The Philodendron Gigas is considered a rare plant, making it a must-have for collectors. Its unique combination of size, texture, and coloration sets it apart from other philodendrons.

Care Instructions

The Philodendron Gigas is relatively easy to care for, provided its basic needs are met. It thrives in conditions that mimic its natural tropical environment.

  • Light: Provide bright, indirect light to encourage healthy growth and maintain the plant’s velvety texture. While it can tolerate medium light, insufficient light may slow its growth and reduce the vibrancy of its foliage. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can scorch the leaves.
  • Watering: Allow the top 1–2 inches of soil to dry out between waterings. Overwatering can lead to root rot, so ensure the pot has proper drainage. During the growing season (spring and summer), water more frequently, but reduce watering in the fall and winter.
  • Humidity: This tropical plant thrives in high humidity levels, ideally around 60–80%. If your home is dry, consider misting the plant, using a pebble tray, or placing it near a humidifier.
  • Temperature: Keep the plant in a warm environment, ideally between 65–85°F (18–29°C). Avoid exposing it to temperatures below 55°F (13°C) or cold drafts, as these can harm the plant.
  • Soil: Use a well-draining soil mix, such as one designed for aroids. A mix of potting soil, perlite, and orchid bark works well to provide aeration and prevent waterlogging.
  • Fertilizer: Feed your Philodendron Gigas with a diluted liquid fertilizer every 4–6 weeks during the growing season. Reduce feeding in the fall and winter when the plant’s growth slows.
  • Support: As a climbing plant, the Gigas benefits from a moss pole or trellis to support its growth and encourage larger, healthier leaves.
