Pellionia repens, commonly known as the Trailing Watermelon Begonia, is a perennial herbaceous plant native to Southeast Asia, including regions like Sumatra. It is recognized for its attractive, variegated foliage and trailing growth habit, making it a popular choice for indoor cultivation.

Key Characteristics:

  • Foliage: The plant features heart-shaped leaves with a mix of green and silver patterns, resembling watermelon rind. The undersides of the leaves are typically tinged with purple.

  • Growth Habit: Pellionia repens exhibits a creeping or trailing growth pattern, often used as a ground cover or in hanging baskets.

Care Requirements:

  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. While it can tolerate lower light conditions, insufficient light may result in slower growth and less vibrant foliage.

  • Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Overwatering can lead to root rot, so ensure the pot has proper drainage.

  • Soil: Use a well-draining, peat-based potting mix to promote healthy root development.

  • Temperature: Ideal temperatures range from 65°F to 80°F (18°C to 27°C). Protect from drafts and sudden temperature fluctuations.

  • Humidity: Thrives in high humidity environments. Regular misting or placing the pot on a humidity tray can help maintain the necessary moisture.
