Description

  • Family: Orchidaceae

  • Origin: Native to China, Myanmar, and surrounding regions, typically growing in shaded, mountainous forests at 1,200–2,000 meters elevation.

  • Type: Terrestrial or lithophytic orchid (grows on the ground or on mossy rocks).

  • Leaves: Broad, green, often slightly leathery, usually 4–6 leaves per plant. Some varieties have faint mottling.

  • Flowers: Large, elegant slipper-shaped flowers with a creamy white to pale green base, decorated with maroon or purple spots and stripes on the pouch and petals. Usually 1–2 flowers per inflorescence. The flower is long-lasting, often 4–6 weeks.

  • Blooming season: Late winter to spring, sometimes early summer.

Paphiopedilum wardii is highly prized by collectors for its dramatic, patterned flowers and relative compactness, making it ideal for indoor cultivation.

Care Guide:

Light

  • Prefers bright, indirect light, similar to a shaded forest understory.

  • Avoid direct sunlight to prevent leaf burn.

  • East-facing windows or filtered light from a sheer curtain is ideal.

Temperature

  • Day: 70–80°F (21–27°C)

  • Night: 55–65°F (13–18°C)

  • Cooler nighttime temperatures encourage flowering.

Humidity

  • Prefers moderate to high humidity, around 50–70%.

  • Good air circulation is essential to prevent fungal or bacterial infections.

  • Use humidity trays or mist occasionally if air is dry.

Watering

  • Keep the growing medium evenly moist, but not waterlogged.

  • Water when the top of the medium starts to dry.

  • Avoid water sitting in the crown or in pots without drainage.

Potting Medium

  • Use a well-draining mix suitable for Paphiopedilums: fine bark, perlite, and peat moss or sphagnum moss.

  • Repot every 1–2 years to refresh the medium and remove old roots.

Fertilization

  • Feed with a balanced orchid fertilizer diluted to quarter–half strength every 2–3 weeks during active growth.

  • Reduce fertilization during winter or dormancy.

Flowering

  • Flower spikes emerge from the base of the plant.

  • Each flower lasts several weeks; after blooming, remove the spent flower but leave the foliage intact.

  • Proper care can encourage annual blooming.
