Care Guide: Paphiopedilum spicerianum

Light

  • Prefers bright, indirect light, similar to its natural shaded forest habitat.

  • Avoid direct sunlight, which can burn the leaves.

  • East-facing windows or filtered light with a sheer curtain work best.

Temperature

  • Day: 70–80°F (21–27°C)

  • Night: 55–65°F (13–18°C)

  • Cooler night temperatures promote flowering.

Humidity

  • Likes moderate to high humidity, around 50–70%.

  • Ensure good air circulation to prevent fungal or bacterial problems.

  • Humidity trays or occasional misting are helpful if the air is dry.

Watering

  • Keep the medium evenly moist, but never soggy.

  • Water when the top layer of the medium starts to dry out.

  • Avoid letting water sit in the crown or in poorly-draining pots.

Potting Medium

  • Use a well-draining Paphiopedilum mix, such as fine bark, perlite, and peat moss or sphagnum moss.

  • Repot every 1–2 years, or when the medium starts to break down.

Fertilization

  • Feed with a balanced orchid fertilizer at quarter–half strength every 2–3 weeks during active growth.

  • Reduce feeding in winter or dormant periods.

Flowering

  • Flower spikes grow from the base of the plant.

  • Each flower lasts several weeks; remove spent flowers but leave foliage to continue feeding the plant.

  • Proper care can encourage consistent yearly blooms.
