Care Guide: Paphiopedilum appletonianum

Light

  • Prefers bright, indirect light.

  • Avoid direct sunlight to prevent leaf burn.

  • Ideal placement is an east-facing window or filtered light through a sheer curtain.

Temperature

  • Day: 70–80°F (21–27°C)

  • Night: 55–65°F (13–18°C)

  • Moderate temperature fluctuations between day and night promote flowering.

Humidity

  • Likes moderate to high humidity, around 50–70%.

  • Good air circulation is essential to prevent fungal or bacterial infections.

  • Humidity trays or occasional misting are helpful if the environment is dry.

Watering

  • Keep the medium evenly moist, but not waterlogged.

  • Water when the top layer of the medium begins to dry.

  • Avoid water sitting in the crown or in pots with poor drainage.

Potting Medium

  • Use a well-draining Paphiopedilum mix: fine bark, perlite, and peat moss or sphagnum moss.

  • Repot every 1–2 years to refresh the medium and prevent root rot.

Fertilization

  • Feed with a balanced orchid fertilizer diluted to quarter–half strength every 2–3 weeks during active growth.

  • Reduce feeding during winter or dormant periods.

Flowering

  • Inflorescences grow from the base of the plant.

  • Flowers last several weeks; after blooming, remove the spent flower but leave foliage to continue nourishing the plant.

  • Proper care encourages annual flowering.
