🌸 Masdevallia murex — Description

Masdevallia murex is a miniature species from the cool, misty cloud forests of Ecuador and Colombia, where it grows as an epiphyte at high elevations.

  • Plant size: Miniature to small

  • Growth habit: Clumping, with short stems and narrow, upright leaves

  • Flowers:

    • Usually single-flowered on short stalks

    • Sepals are sharply pointed and often spiky (hence murex, meaning “spiny”)

    • Color ranges from deep burgundy, wine-red, purple-brown, sometimes with lighter veins or translucent tips

    • Texture can look leathery or waxy

  • Blooming: Often fall through spring, but timing varies with conditions

  • Scent: Typically none, or very faint

It’s one of those Masdevallias that looks intense and slightly alien—small flower, big attitude.

🌿 Care Guide

Masdevallia murex is not hard, but it is specific. Think cool, moist, and airy.

🌡️ Temperature (Most Important)

  • Day: 55–70°F (13–21°C)

  • Night: 45–55°F (7–13°C)

  • Does not tolerate heat well—extended temps above ~75°F (24°C) can stress or kill it.

👉 Ideal for a cool room, basement grow space, or orchid case.

💡 Light

  • Low to medium light

  • Similar to Phalaenopsis or slightly less

  • Bright shade is perfect

  • Leaves should be medium green, not dark or yellow

Avoid direct sun—it burns easily.

💧 Water

  • Likes to be consistently moist, never dry

  • Water when the surface just begins to dry, but don’t let it stay soggy

  • Use cool, pure water (rain, RO, or distilled preferred)

⚠️ Drying out even once can cause leaf loss.

🌫️ Humidity

  • 70–90% humidity is ideal

  • Must be paired with excellent air movement to prevent rot

🪴 Potting & Media

  • Commonly grown in:

    • Fine bark + sphagnum mix

    • Pure long-fiber sphagnum (popular for Masdevallias)

    • Mounted (only if you can water daily)

Roots are fine and delicate—don’t pack media tightly.

🌱 Fertilizer

  • Weak but regular feeding

  • Use ¼ strength orchid fertilizer every 2–3 weeks

  • Flush with plain water monthly to prevent salt buildup

🔁 Repotting

  • Repot every 1–2 years, or when media breaks down

  • Best done after flowering or when new growth starts

🚨 Common Problems

  • Leaf drop: Usually from heat or drying out

  • Black spots / rot: Too wet + poor airflow

  • No blooms: Often too warm or too much light

🌟 Best Environment

Masdevallia murex thrives in:

  • Orchid terrariums or display cases

  • Cool greenhouses

  • Naturally cool, humid homes (coastal or mountainous climates)
