The Lipstick Plant (Aeschynanthus radicans), sometimes referred to as Japhrolepis, is a popular tropical houseplant known for its vibrant, tube-shaped flowers that resemble a tube of lipstick emerging from a case. Native to Southeast Asia, this trailing plant is prized for its glossy foliage and striking blooms, making it a favorite for hanging baskets and shelves.

Key Features:

1. Foliage: Glossy, dark green, ovate leaves that grow densely along cascading stems.

2. Flowers: Bright red, tubular flowers emerge from a darker calyx, creating a "lipstick" effect. Blooms appear in clusters and are most prolific during the growing season.

3. Growth Habit: A trailing or climbing plant, ideal for hanging baskets or as a cascading feature in a pot.

Care Tips:

1. Light: Thrives in bright, indirect light. Direct sunlight can scorch the leaves, while insufficient light may reduce flowering. A spot near a well-lit window is ideal.

2. Watering: Keep the soil evenly moist during the growing season, but avoid waterlogging. Allow the top inch of soil to dry out slightly between waterings. Water less frequently in winter.

3. Humidity: Prefers moderate to high humidity (50-70%). Misting or placing the plant near a humidifier can help in drier environments.

4. Temperature: Enjoys warm temperatures between 18-26°C (65-80°F). Protect from drafts and avoid temperatures below 10°C (50°F).

5. Soil: Requires well-draining soil. A mix of potting soil, orchid bark, and perlite works well to prevent water retention.

6. Fertilizer: Feed with a diluted, balanced liquid fertilizer every 2-4 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer) to encourage blooming. Reduce feeding in fall and winter.

7. Pruning: Prune after flowering to encourage bushier growth and remove dead or damaged stems.

Additional Notes:

Propagation: Propagates easily through stem cuttings. Place cuttings in water or moist soil to root.

Blooms: Flowers more readily with sufficient light and humidity. Deadhead spent flowers to encourage further blooming.

Pests: May occasionally attract mealybugs, aphids, or spider mites. Regular inspection and cleaning help prevent infestations.

Non-Toxic: Safe for pets and humans, making it a pet-friendly plant.

The Lipstick Plant is a low-maintenance, visually striking addition to any plant collection. Its cascading habit and vibrant flowers make it a beautiful focal point in hanging baskets or as part of a tropical indoor display.
