The Hoya Phuwuaensis 'Splash', a stunning tropical plant native to the Phu Wua Wildlife Sanctuary in northeastern Thailand, is a must-have for Hoya enthusiasts and collectors. Known for its elegant, silver-speckled foliage and easy-care nature, this plant is perfect for adding a touch of exotic beauty to your indoor garden. Its resemblance to the Hoya Caudata, with its unique ruffled leaves and silvery splashes, makes it a standout addition to any plant collection.

Plant Characteristics

  • Foliage: The Hoya Phuwuaensis 'Splash' features slender, elongated leaves with prominent silver speckling across the surface. The leaves have a slightly ruffled texture, adding depth and character to their appearance. The silver "splash" pattern contrasts beautifully with the deep green base, making this plant a true visual delight.
  • Growth Habit: This Hoya has a trailing or twining growth habit, making it ideal for hanging baskets, shelves, or trellises. Its woody stems and manageable growth make it a versatile plant for any indoor space.
  • Flowers: While the foliage is the main attraction, the Hoya Phuwuaensis 'Splash' may produce clusters of small, star-shaped flowers under the right conditions. These blooms are fragrant and add an extra layer of charm to this already captivating plant.

Care Instructions

The Hoya Phuwuaensis 'Splash' is a hardy and low-maintenance plant, making it an excellent choice for both beginners and experienced plant parents.

  • Light: Provide bright, indirect light to maintain the plant’s vibrant silver splashes and encourage healthy growth. While it can tolerate medium light, brighter conditions will enhance its foliage and increase the likelihood of blooming. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can scorch the leaves.
  • Watering: Allow the top layer of soil to dry out between waterings. Water thoroughly when the soil feels dry to the touch, but avoid overwatering, as this plant is sensitive to waterlogged conditions. Its semi-succulent leaves store moisture, making it drought-tolerant.
  • Humidity: This tropical plant thrives in moderate to high humidity levels, ideally around 50–70%. While it adapts well to average household humidity, misting or placing it near a humidifier can help it thrive.
  • Temperature: Keep the plant in a warm environment, ideally between 60–85°F (16–29°C). Avoid exposing it to temperatures below 55°F (13°C) or cold drafts, as these can harm the plant.
  • Soil: Use a well-draining soil mix, such as one designed for epiphytic plants. A combination of orchid bark, perlite, and peat moss works well to mimic its natural growing conditions.
  • Fertilizer: Feed your Hoya Phuwuaensis 'Splash' with a diluted liquid fertilizer every 4–6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce feeding during the fall and winter when the plant’s growth slows.
