The Hoya Macrophylla, also known as the Wax Plant or Porcelain Flower, is a stunning tropical vine that brings elegance and charm to any indoor space. With its large, glossy, and uniquely variegated leaves, this plant is a favorite among collectors and houseplant enthusiasts alike. Whether displayed on a shelf, in a hanging planter, or trained on a trellis, the Hoya Macrophylla is sure to be a showstopper in your home.

Plant Characteristics

  • Foliage: The Hoya Macrophylla is celebrated for its large, oval-shaped leaves that can grow up to 4–8 inches long. The leaves are thick, leathery, and waxy, with distinctive creases running along their surface and white variegation on the edge. New growth often emerges with a pinkish hue, adding even more visual interest.
  • Growth Habit: This vining plant grows long, narrow stems that can trail gracefully or climb when supported. Its manageable growth habit makes it perfect for hanging baskets, shelves, or trellises.
  • Flowers: While the foliage is the main attraction, the Hoya Macrophylla occasionally produces clusters of star-shaped, fragrant flowers. These blooms are creamy white with a pink or yellow center and grow in spherical clusters called umbels. Their sweet fragrance adds an extra layer of delight to this already captivating plant.

Care Instructions

The Hoya Macrophylla is a low-maintenance plant, making it an excellent choice for both beginners and experienced plant parents.

  • Light: Provide bright, indirect light to encourage healthy growth and vibrant variegation. While it can tolerate medium light, insufficient light may reduce the intensity of its variegation and slow its growth. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can scorch the leaves.
  • Watering: Allow the soil to dry out between waterings. The Hoya Macrophylla’s semi-succulent leaves store moisture, so it prefers being slightly underwatered rather than overwatered. Ensure the pot has proper drainage to prevent root rot.
  • Humidity: This tropical plant thrives in moderate to high humidity levels, ideally around 50–70%. While it adapts well to average household humidity, misting or placing it near a humidifier can help it thrive.
  • Temperature: Keep the plant in a warm environment, ideally between 65–85°F (18–29°C). Avoid exposing it to temperatures below 55°F (13°C) or cold drafts, as these can harm the plant.
  • Soil: Use a well-draining soil mix, such as one designed for epiphytic plants. A combination of orchid bark, perlite, and peat moss works well to keep the roots healthy and prevent overwatering.
  • Fertilizer: Feed your Hoya Macrophylla with a diluted liquid fertilizer every 4–6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce feeding during the fall and winter when the plant’s growth slows.
