Hoya lobbii 'Dark Red' is a captivating variety of the Hoya genus, celebrated for its striking deep red, star-shaped flowers and robust, glossy green foliage. This tropical plant is native to regions of Southeast Asia, including India, Myanmar, and Thailand.

Key Features:

  • Flowers: The plant produces umbels of approximately 10 reflexed flowers, each about 2 cm in diameter. Both the corolla and corona exhibit a rich dark red hue, though variations can occur even on the same plant. The blooms have a weak or absent scent and can last up to 10 days.

  • Foliage: Leaves are thick, leathery, and measure around 10 cm in length and 3 cm in width. They are green with silver mottling and feature conspicuous darker green veins.

  • Growth Habit: Hoya lobbii 'Dark Red' has a shrubby or hanging growth pattern, making it suitable for hanging baskets or trellises.

Cultivation and Care:

  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light but can tolerate partial shade. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.

  • Watering: Water thoroughly, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings. Overwatering can lead to root rot.

  • Soil: Thrives in well-draining soil. A mix designed for epiphytic plants or a combination of orchid bark, perlite, and peat is ideal.

  • Temperature: Not frost-tolerant; maintain temperatures above 14°C (57°F).

  • Humidity: Enjoys higher humidity levels but can adapt to average household humidity.

  • Fertilization: During the growing season, apply a balanced, diluted fertilizer monthly.
