The Hoya Latifolia, also known as the Dinner Plate Hoya due to its impressively large and broad leaves, is a striking addition to any plant collection. This tropical beauty is loved for its bold foliage, unique vining habit, and occasional clusters of fragrant flowers. Perfect for both novice and seasoned plant enthusiasts, the Hoya Latifolia is a showstopper that’s easy to care for and hard to miss!

Plant Characteristics

  • Foliage: The standout feature of the Hoya Latifolia is its large, round, and thick leaves that can grow up to 8–12 inches in diameter. These leaves are a deep green and have a smooth, waxy texture, giving the plant a radiant, glossy appearance. Their size and bold veining make them a true statement piece in any space.
  • Growth Habit: As a vining plant, the Hoya Latifolia thrives when allowed to climb a trellis or cascade gracefully from a hanging planter. It grows steadily and develops a lush, full appearance with proper care.
  • Flowers: Like many Hoyas, the Latifolia produces clusters of fragrant, star-shaped flowers. The blooms are creamy white with a pinkish or yellow center and grow in spherical clusters called umbels. While flowering is less frequent, the sight and scent of these blooms are well worth the wait.

Care Instructions

Caring for the Hoya Latifolia is straightforward, making it an excellent choice for plant lovers of all experience levels.

  • Light: Provide bright, indirect light to encourage healthy growth and flowering. While it tolerates medium light, insufficient light may slow its growth and reduce the chances of blooming. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can scorch the leaves.
  • Watering: Allow the soil to dry out between waterings. Its thick, semi-succulent leaves store moisture, so it’s better to underwater than overwater. Ensure the pot has proper drainage to prevent water from pooling at the roots.
  • Humidity: The Hoya Latifolia thrives in higher humidity levels, ideally around 50–70%. While it adapts well to average household humidity, misting or using a humidifier can boost its overall health.
  • Temperature: This tropical plant prefers warm environments between 65–85°F (18–29°C). Avoid exposing it to temperatures below 55°F (13°C) or cold drafts, as these can harm the plant.
  • Soil: Use a well-draining soil mix, such as one made for epiphytic plants. A combination of orchid bark, perlite, and peat moss is ideal for maintaining healthy root systems.
  • Fertilizer: Feed your Hoya Latifolia with a diluted liquid fertilizer every 4–6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce feeding during the fall and winter when the plant's growth slows.
