The Hoya Imbricata is a rare and fascinating plant that stands out for its unique growth habit and striking foliage. Native to the Philippines and Sulawesi, this tropical beauty is a shingling Hoya, meaning its leaves grow flat against a surface, creating a layered, architectural effect. Perfect for collectors and plant enthusiasts, the Hoya Imbricata is not only visually stunning but also a conversation starter due to its symbiotic relationship with ants in its natural habitat.

Plant Characteristics

  • Foliage: The Hoya Imbricata features large, round, dome-shaped leaves that can grow up to 9–10 inches in diameter. The leaves are dark green with mottled silver or purple blotches, giving them a marbled appearance. When grown on a flat surface, the leaves form a shingling pattern, overlapping like roof tiles. In hanging baskets, the leaves may fold slightly, resembling small purses  .
  • Growth Habit: This plant is a true epiphyte, thriving when grown on a moss pole, tree bark, or other flat surfaces. Its shingling growth habit makes it a unique addition to any plant collection, whether displayed vertically or allowed to trail.
  • Flowers: The Hoya Imbricata occasionally produces small, star-shaped flowers in clusters. These blooms are fragrant and add an extra layer of charm to this already captivating plant.
  • Unique Feature: In its natural habitat, the Hoya Imbricata forms shallow, dome-like enclosures between its leaves and the substrate, which serve as nesting sites for ants. While this relationship is not necessary in cultivation, it highlights the plant’s fascinating ecological adaptations  .

Care Instructions

The Hoya Imbricata is relatively easy to care for, provided its unique needs are met. It thrives in conditions that mimic its natural tropical environment.

  • Light: Provide bright, indirect light to encourage healthy growth and vibrant foliage. While it can tolerate medium light, insufficient light may slow its growth and reduce its shingling effect. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can scorch the leaves.
  • Watering: Allow the soil or moss substrate to dry out slightly between waterings. The Hoya Imbricata prefers consistent moisture but is sensitive to overwatering. Water thoroughly, ensuring proper drainage to prevent root rot.
  • Humidity: This tropical plant thrives in high humidity levels, ideally around 60–80%. Use a humidifier or place the plant in a naturally humid area, such as a bathroom, to keep it happy.
  • Temperature: Keep the plant in a warm environment, ideally between 65–85°F (18–29°C). Avoid exposing it to temperatures below 55°F (13°C) or cold drafts, as these can harm the plant.
  • Soil: Use a well-draining, humus-rich soil mix or mount the plant on a moss pole or bark slab to mimic its natural epiphytic growing conditions. A mix of orchid bark, perlite, and peat moss works well for potted plants.
  • Fertilizer: Feed your Hoya Imbricata with a diluted liquid fertilizer every 4–6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce feeding during the fall and winter when the plant’s growth slows.
