The Fukien Tea Bonsai (Carmona retusa or Ehretia microphylla) is a tropical evergreen admired for its glossy, dark green leaves, delicate white flowers, and attractive bark. Its compact size and intricate features make it a favorite among bonsai enthusiasts.

Light: Place your Fukien Tea Bonsai in a location with bright, indirect light. While it can tolerate some shade, insufficient light may reduce flowering. Avoid direct midday sunlight, as it can scorch the leaves.

Temperature and Humidity: This bonsai thrives in warm environments, preferring temperatures between 60°F and 75°F (15°C to 24°C). It is sensitive to cold and should be protected from temperatures below 50°F (10°C). Maintaining moderate humidity levels is beneficial; if your indoor environment is dry, consider occasional misting or using a humidity tray.

Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Allow the top inch of soil to dry out slightly between waterings. Overwatering can lead to root rot, while underwatering may cause leaf drop. Regularly check the soil moisture and adjust your watering schedule accordingly.

Soil: A well-draining, slightly acidic soil mix rich in organic matter is ideal. A bonsai-specific potting mix can provide the necessary nutrients and drainage properties.

Fertilization: During the growing season (spring and summer), feed your Fukien Tea Bonsai every two weeks with a liquid bonsai fertilizer. In the winter months, reduce fertilization to once every six weeks. Always water the plant before applying fertilizer to prevent root burn.

Pruning and Training: Regular pruning helps maintain the desired shape and encourages dense foliage. Trim new shoots back to two to three leaves after they have developed six to eight leaves. Wiring can be used to shape the branches, but be cautious, as the branches can be brittle.

Repotting: Repot your Fukien Tea Bonsai every two to three years, preferably in late spring or early summer. Use a well-draining bonsai soil mix and prune the roots carefully to promote healthy growth.

Pests and Diseases: Common pests include spider mites, scale insects, mealybugs, and aphids. Regular inspection and prompt treatment with insecticidal soap or neem oil can help manage infestations. Ensure proper watering practices to prevent root rot and other fungal issues.

By providing appropriate care, your Fukien Tea Bonsai can thrive and bring beauty to your indoor space.
