Ficus benjamina 'Variegata', commonly known as the Variegated Weeping Fig, is a popular houseplant admired for its glossy green leaves edged with creamy white margins. This variegation adds a touch of elegance to indoor spaces.

Key Characteristics:

  • Foliage: The plant features pointed, oval to elliptic leaves up to 4 inches long, with irregular white margins.

  • Growth Habit: Indoors, it typically grows between 3 to 6 feet tall, forming a graceful, arching canopy.

Care Requirements:

  • Light: Thrives in bright, indirect light. While it can adapt to lower light conditions, insufficient light may reduce variegation and hinder growth.

  • Watering: Maintain consistently moist soil during the growing season, allowing the top 2-3 inches to dry out between waterings. Reduce watering during fall and winter.

  • Humidity: Prefers high humidity. Regular misting or using a humidifier can help maintain optimal moisture levels.

  • Temperature: Ideal indoor temperatures range between 65°F to 75°F (18°C to 24°C). Avoid exposure to drafts or sudden temperature changes.

  • Soil: Use a well-draining, soil-based potting mix. Ensure the pot has drainage holes to prevent waterlogging.

Additional Tips:

  • Leaf Drop: Ficus benjamina is sensitive to environmental changes and may shed leaves when moved or exposed to stress. To minimize leaf drop, keep the plant in a stable environment with consistent care.

  • Pruning: Regular pruning helps maintain the desired shape and encourages bushier growth. Prune in early spring before new growth begins.

  • Pests: Watch for common houseplant pests like mealybugs, spider mites, and scale. Treat infestations promptly with appropriate methods.

With proper care, the Variegated Weeping Fig can be a stunning and enduring addition to your indoor plant collection.
