Ficus altissima, commonly known as the Lofty Fig or Council Tree, is a tropical evergreen tree that has become a popular houseplant due to its vibrant, variegated foliage and easy-going nature. Native to Southeast Asia, this plant brings a bold, tropical look to indoor spaces.

Key Features:

1. Foliage: Large, glossy leaves with striking variegation. The leaves are typically a vibrant green with yellow or lime-green centers, creating a dramatic contrast.

2. Size: Indoors, it can grow up to 1.8-3 meters (6-10 feet) tall, depending on care and space. In its natural habitat, it grows much larger.

3. Growth Habit: Upright with a bushy form when young, developing a more tree-like structure over time.

Care Tips:

1. Light: Thrives in bright, indirect light. Direct sunlight can scorch the leaves, but low light may reduce variegation. Place near a window with filtered light for best results.

2. Watering: Allow the top 2-3 inches of soil to dry out between waterings. Overwatering can lead to root rot, while underwatering may cause leaf drop.

3. Humidity: Prefers moderate to high humidity but adapts well to average household levels. Use a humidifier or mist occasionally if the air is very dry.

4. Temperature: Enjoys warm temperatures between 18-26°C (65-80°F). Avoid cold drafts and temperatures below 15°C (59°F).

5. Soil: Requires well-draining soil, such as a mix of potting soil and perlite or sand, to prevent waterlogging.

6. Fertilizer: Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer).

7. Pruning: Prune back leggy or overgrown branches to shape the plant and promote bushier growth. Remove any yellowing or damaged leaves.

Additional Notes:

Pests: May attract spider mites, scale, or mealybugs. Wipe leaves regularly with a damp cloth and inspect for signs of pests.

Toxicity: Toxic to pets and humans if ingested, causing irritation or digestive upset.

Propagation: Can be propagated through stem cuttings. Place cuttings in water or moist soil to encourage rooting.

Ficus altissima is an excellent choice for plant enthusiasts looking for a hardy yet visually striking plant. With its vibrant foliage and manageable care requirements, it makes a bold statement in any home or office.
