The Duranta Sapphire Showers (Duranta erecta 'Sapphire Showers') is a beautiful flowering shrub known for its cascading clusters of vibrant, violet-blue flowers. It is often grown as a small tree or shrub and can be used in gardens, containers, or as an ornamental plant in tropical and subtropical regions. Its attractive flowers and striking appearance make it a popular choice for both landscaping and indoor spaces (in pots).

Care Instructions

Light: Prefers full sun to partial shade. The more sunlight it gets, the more abundant and vibrant the flowering will be. Too much shade may result in fewer blooms.

Watering: Keep the soil moderately moist but well-drained. Water regularly, allowing the top 1–2 inches of soil to dry out between waterings. Overwatering or waterlogged soil can lead to root rot, so ensure the pot has good drainage.

Humidity: Duranta Sapphire Showers can tolerate moderate humidity, but it thrives in higher humidity. Misting the plant or placing it on a humidity tray can help in dry indoor conditions.

Temperature: Ideal temperatures are between 18–29°C (65–85°F). This plant is not frost-tolerant and should be protected from temperatures below 10°C (50°F).

Soil: Prefers well-draining, slightly acidic to neutral soil. Use a mix formulated for shrubs or tropical plants with good aeration to ensure proper drainage.

Fertilizer: Feed with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer or liquid fertilizer every 4–6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce feeding during the fall and winter months when the plant is less active.

Additional Notes

Growth Habit: Duranta Sapphire Showers can grow up to 6–8 feet in height when fully mature, with a spreading habit that makes it great for containers or as a low hedge. The plant produces drooping clusters of blue or lavender-colored flowers in the summer, followed by small, yellow berries.

Flowering: The plant is especially valued for its profuse, cascading flowers that attract butterflies and hummingbirds. The blooms appear in clusters, adding a stunning visual impact when in full bloom.

Pruning: Regular pruning helps maintain a compact shape and promotes more blooming. Trim back any leggy growth and remove spent flowers to encourage new flower production.

Toxicity: The berries of the Duranta plant are toxic if ingested, so keep it away from pets and small children. The plant's flowers and leaves are generally safe but should be handled with care.
