Dracaena surculosa 'Florida Beauty', commonly known as the Gold Dust Dracaena or Spotted Dracaena, is a tropical evergreen shrub admired for its distinctive variegated foliage. Native to western tropical Africa, this plant is popular as a houseplant due to its attractive appearance and relatively low maintenance requirements.

Key Characteristics:

  • Foliage: The plant features glossy, dark green leaves adorned with creamy yellow or white spots, giving it a speckled appearance. The leaves are elliptical and grow in clusters along thin, upright stems, resembling bamboo.

  • Growth Habit: Dracaena 'Florida Beauty' has a bushy, upright growth pattern, typically reaching up to 3 feet (90 cm) in height and width when grown indoors. Its compact size makes it suitable for small spaces and tabletops.

Cultivation and Care:

  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light but can tolerate lower light conditions. However, insufficient light may reduce the vibrancy of its variegation. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can scorch the leaves.

  • Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Allow the top inch of soil to dry out between waterings. Overwatering can lead to root rot, so ensure proper drainage.

  • Humidity: Thrives in moderate to high humidity environments. Regular misting or placing the plant on a humidity tray can help maintain adequate moisture levels.

  • Temperature: Prefers temperatures between 60°F to 75°F (16°C to 24°C). Protect from drafts and sudden temperature changes.

  • Soil: Requires well-draining, loamy soil. A standard potting mix with added perlite or sand to improve drainage works well.
