Dieffenbachia 'Crocodile', also known as the Dumb Cane Crocodile, is a captivating member of the Araceae family, celebrated for its stunning foliage. The leaves boast a beautiful variegation, typically a combination of deep green and cream or lime. But the true star of the show is the unique texture—the undersides of the leaves resemble crocodile skin, complete with a raised midrib that runs down the center. This textural detail adds a touch of the unexpected and makes the Dieffenbachia Crocodile a truly conversation-starting plant.

Key Characteristics:

  • Foliage: The leaves are large, oval-shaped, and display a striking camouflage pattern with varying shades of green and cream. The undersides are heavily textured, resembling crocodile skin.

  • Growth Habit: This Dieffenbachia grows upright, with leaves that resemble crocodile teeth. Over time, it forms an upright cane, similar to that of palm species. The species this cultivar was bred from originated from Central and South America.

Cultivation and Care:

  • Light: Dieffenbachia Crocodile thrives in bright, indirect light. While it can tolerate some direct sunlight, excessive exposure may cause the leaves to scorch.

  • Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Allow the top inch of soil to dry out between waterings. Ensure the pot has proper drainage to prevent root rot.

  • Soil: Use well-draining potting soil. A mix designed for houseplants or a peat-based mix with added perlite works well.

  • Temperature: Thrives in temperatures between 65°F to 80°F (18°C to 27°C). Protect from drafts and sudden temperature changes.

  • Humidity: High humidity is beneficial. Regular misting or placing the plant on a humidity tray can help maintain optimal conditions.
