Cotyledon pendens, commonly known as the Cliff Cotyledon, is a distinctive succulent native to South Africa. This plant is celebrated for its unique trailing growth habit and attractive foliage.

Key Characteristics:

  • Foliage: The leaves are thick, teardrop-shaped, and have a powdery, glaucous coating. They are typically green with reddish margins, which become more pronounced under direct sunlight.

  • Growth Habit: Cotyledon pendens is a much-branched shrublet with dense, trailing stems that can grow up to 2 feet (60 cm) long. These stems continuously branch from nodes, forming a curtain-like appearance.

  • Flowers: During the summer, the plant produces orange-red, bell-shaped flowers that dangle from slender stalks at the ends of the branches. The flower stalks can grow up to 1.6 inches (4 cm) long.

Cultivation and Care:

  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. While it can tolerate some direct sunlight, excessive exposure may cause leaf burn.

  • Watering: Allow the soil to dry out between waterings. Overwatering can lead to root rot, so ensure the pot has proper drainage.

  • Soil: Use a well-draining potting mix, such as one formulated for succulents or cacti.

  • Temperature: Thrives in temperatures ranging from 60°F to 80°F (16°C to 27°C). Protect from drafts and sudden temperature fluctuations.

  • Humidity: Average indoor humidity is sufficient. If the air is very dry, occasional misting can help.
