The Calamondin Orange (Citrus × microcarpa) is a small, bushy evergreen shrub native to Southeast Asia. It's a hybrid between the mandarin orange (Citrus reticulata) and the kumquat (Fortunella japonica), resulting in a plant that combines the best traits of both species.

Key Characteristics:

  • Foliage: The Calamondin features glossy, dark green leaves that are elliptical in shape, providing a lush appearance year-round.

  • Flowers: It produces fragrant, white, five-petaled flowers that bloom primarily in spring but can appear sporadically throughout the year.

  • Fruit: The plant bears small, round, orange fruits approximately 1.5 inches (3.8 cm) in diameter. The peel is sweet, while the pulp is very sour and acidic. Each fruit contains 6-9 fleshy segments.

Growing Conditions:

  • Light: Calamondin oranges thrive in full sun but can tolerate partial shade. For optimal growth and fruit production, it's best to provide them with ample sunlight.

  • Soil: They prefer well-draining, slightly acidic soil. Planting in a terracotta pot with drainage holes is recommended to prevent waterlogging.

  • Watering: Allow the top 10 cm of the compost to dry out between waterings. It's better to under-water than over-water, as Calamondin is relatively drought-tolerant.

  • Temperature: Calamondin oranges are hardy in USDA plant hardiness zones 8-11, making them suitable for outdoor cultivation in mild climates. In cooler regions, they can be grown in containers and brought indoors during the winter months.

Uses:

  • Culinary: The sour pulp of the Calamondin is used in various dishes, beverages, and marinades. The sweet peel can also be used to make jams and jellies.

  • Ornamental: With its attractive foliage, fragrant flowers, and colorful fruits, the Calamondin makes an excellent ornamental plant for gardens and patios.
