The Cinnamon Tree (Cinnamomum verum), also known as True Cinnamon, is a tropical evergreen tree native to Sri Lanka and southern India, well-known for its aromatic bark, which is the source of the spice we use in cooking. Growing a cinnamon tree at home can be a rewarding experience for those interested in spices, herbal medicine, or just unique houseplants.

Care Instructions

Light: Cinnamon trees prefer bright, indirect sunlight. In lower light, the plant may become leggy and produce less fragrant bark. If grown outdoors, choose a location with partial shade, especially in hot climates.

Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy. Allow the top 2–3 inches of soil to dry out between waterings. Avoid overwatering, as this can cause root rot.

Humidity: Prefers high humidity (50–60%). Consider using a humidifier or misting the leaves regularly if growing in a dry indoor environment.

Temperature: Thrives in warm temperatures between 18–30°C (65–85°F). It’s not frost-tolerant, so avoid placing it in areas where temperatures drop below 10°C (50°F).

Soil: A well-draining, slightly acidic soil is best. A mix of potting soil, perlite, and a bit of sand for drainage works well.

Fertilizer: Fertilize monthly with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce feeding in fall and winter when the plant is not actively growing.

Additional Notes

Growth Habit: Cinnamon trees can grow up to 10–15 feet in height when fully mature, though they are often kept smaller in containers. The tree has aromatic, glossy green leaves and smooth bark that can be peeled to harvest cinnamon.

Harvesting Cinnamon: Cinnamon bark is harvested when the tree is mature (usually around 2–3 years). After harvesting, the bark is dried and rolled into cinnamon sticks. It takes patience, but it's a rewarding process for spice lovers.

Pruning: To maintain a manageable size for indoor growing, regular pruning is necessary. You can also prune to promote branching, which helps with harvesting multiple bark sections.

Toxicity: Non-toxic to humans and pets.
