Adromischus maculatus, commonly known as Calico Hearts, is a compact succulent native to South Africa. It's prized for its distinctive, fleshy, spade-shaped leaves adorned with maroon or brown spots, giving it a unique appearance.

Key Characteristics:

  • Size: Typically grows up to 8 inches (20 cm) in height and width.

  • Leaves: Thick, succulent, and spade-shaped, varying in color from plain green to gray, often with maroon or brown blotches.

  • Flowers: Produces small, tubular green inflorescences with pink or white lobes during the summer months.

Cultivation and Care:

  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. Direct sunlight can scorch the leaves, so it's best to provide filtered light.

  • Watering: Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Overwatering can lead to root rot. During the growing season (spring and fall), water moderately; reduce watering during winter.

  • Soil: Requires well-draining, gritty compost. A cactus or succulent mix is ideal.

  • Temperature: Thrives in temperatures between 66°F to 86°F (19°C to 30°C). Not frost-tolerant; if temperatures drop below 50°F (10°C), it's advisable to bring the plant indoors.

  • Humidity: Prefers low to moderate humidity levels. Ensure good air circulation to prevent fungal issues.

Propagation:

Calico Hearts can be propagated from a single leaf. Detach a healthy leaf from the main plant, allow it to callous over for a few days, then place it on well-draining soil. Water sparingly until new growth appears.

Pests and Diseases:

Generally resistant to pests, but watch for mealybugs and vine weevils. Treat infestations promptly with appropriate insecticides.

With proper care, Adromischus maculatus makes a charming addition to any succulent collection, offering unique visual appeal with its spotted leaves.
