Description

  • Type: Epiphytic orchid

  • Growth habit: Creeping rhizome with closely spaced pseudobulbs

  • Pseudobulbs: Small, rounded to slightly flattened, each bearing a single leaf

  • Leaves: Elliptic to oblong, medium green, slightly leathery

  • Flowers: Solitary to few per inflorescence; narrow, strongly twisted sepals (the species name cortortisepalum refers to this twisting). The “Red” form shows deeper reddish to maroon tones, sometimes with darker striping or shading

  • Blooming habit: Often blooms sequentially from mature growths

  • Fragrance: Usually mild to none, sometimes faintly musky

  • Native range: Southeast Asia (humid, shaded forests)

This plant is grown primarily for its unusual, sculptural flowers rather than for showy size or fragrance.

Care Guide

Light

  • Low to medium indirect light

  • Similar to Phalaenopsis or slightly shadier

  • Avoid direct sun, which can scorch leaves

Temperature

  • Warm-growing

  • Ideal range: 20–30°C (68–86°F)

  • Minimum: 15°C (59°F)

Humidity

  • High humidity: 70–85%

  • Provide constant, gentle air movement to prevent rot and fungal issues

Watering

  • Keep consistently moist, but never waterlogged

  • Do not allow the medium to dry completely

  • Mounted plants may need daily watering in warm conditions

Growing Medium

  • Best grown mounted, in net pots, or shallow baskets

  • If potted, use a very open, moisture-retentive mix:

    • Fine bark with sphagnum

    • Or pure long-fiber sphagnum (replace regularly)

  • Keep the creeping rhizome on the surface, not buried

Fertilizer

  • Feed lightly with ÂĽ-strength balanced orchid fertilizer

  • Every 1–2 weeks during active growth

  • Flush with plain water monthly to avoid salt buildup

Rest Period

  • No true dormancy

  • Growth may slow in cooler or darker months—reduce fertilizer slightly but maintain moisture

    FAQs

    Do you ship year-round?

Yes – we ship every week of the year! However, in the case of extreme weather conditions or emergency situations (e.g. flooding/fires that would interupt couriers), we may delay shipping until it is safe to ship.

How long will it take to recieve my order?

We always choose overnight or express shipping options. Once shipped, most orders arrive in 1-2 days in Canada and the USA. Depending on your location, shipping might take longer. Occassionally, customs clearance might take an additional day.

    Where do products ship from?

We ship orders from our store or specialized grow facility in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

Do I recieve a tracking number?

A tracking number will be emailed to you once your order has shipped. You can also find your order and tracking information under your account.

What's the process to return an item if I decide I don'twant it?

We will gladly accept returns for a refund, provided the items and plants have not been damaged, propogated, or repotted. Returned plants are subject to a 10% restocking fee, due to the recovery care needed for returned plants, and shipping/permit costs are nonrefundable. Customers are responsible for return shipping costs as well as all paperwork required to ship back to Canada (e.g. phytosanitary certificates).
