Bucephalandra sp. 'Dark Haruni' is a captivating aquatic plant within the Bucephalandra genus, renowned for its unique leaf coloration and growth characteristics.

Key Characteristics:

  • Foliage: The leaves of 'Dark Haruni' are elongated and lance-shaped, exhibiting a deep green to dark purple hue. The undersides of the leaves often display a reddish tint, adding to the plant's visual appeal. The leaf surface is typically smooth, with a glossy finish that enhances its aesthetic value.

  • Growth Habit: This species is epiphytic, meaning it naturally grows on other surfaces such as rocks or driftwood in its native habitat. In aquariums, it can be attached to hardscapes using aquarium-safe glue or fishing line. The plant exhibits a slow to moderate growth rate, with new leaves emerging gradually over time. Typically, a rhizome with around five leaves can take approximately two weeks to grow a new leaf.

Care Requirements:

  • Light: 'Dark Haruni' thrives in low to medium lighting conditions. While it can tolerate higher light levels, excessive light may encourage algae growth due to its slow growth rate.

  • Water Parameters: This species prefers slightly cooler water temperatures, ranging from 71°F (21°C) to 79°F (26°C). It also benefits from clean, well-filtered water with good flow. A stable, biologically matured tank environment is ideal, with some hardness (GH/KH) being helpful, around 5 dGH and above.

  • Substrate: As an epiphyte, 'Dark Haruni' does not require a substrate. Instead, it should be attached to hard surfaces like rocks or driftwood. It's important to avoid burying the rhizome in the substrate, as this can lead to rot.
