The Anthurium 'Michelle' is a distinguished hybrid anthurium developed by Dr. Jeff Block, commonly known as DocBlock. This cultivar is celebrated for its striking foliage, featuring heart-shaped leaves that emerge in deep burgundy or violet hues and mature into dark green with prominent white veins. The velvety texture of the leaves adds to its visual appeal, making it a prized specimen among plant enthusiasts.

Origin and Development: Named in honor of Dr. Block's wife, Michelle, this hybrid traces its lineage to a unique Anthurium magnificum accession from the mid to late 1980s, attributed to Tim Anderson of Daisy Farms, Inc. Through selective breeding, the 'Michelle' cultivar was developed to enhance its vibrant coloration and robust growth characteristics.

Distinctive Features:

  • Emergent Foliage: New leaves display a rich burgundy or violet color with lighter contrasting veins, gradually transitioning to darker shades as they mature.
  • Leaf Structure: The leaves are heart-shaped with a velvety texture, and the point where the petiole veins emerge forms an "X" shape along the central axis, retaining color throughout maturation.
  • Spadix Coloration: The spadix of the 'Michelle' anthurium exhibits a violet hue, complementing the overall aesthetic of the plant.

Care Guidelines: To maintain the health and beauty of Anthurium 'Michelle', consider the following care recommendations:

  • Light: Provide bright, indirect light to support optimal growth and coloration.
  • Temperature: Maintain ambient temperatures between 65-80°F (18-27°C).
  • Humidity: Aim for humidity levels between 65%-85% to replicate its native tropical environment.
  • Watering: Allow the substrate to dry slightly between waterings, ensuring it doesn't remain dry for extended periods.

In summary, Anthurium 'Michelle' stands out as a remarkable hybrid, combining aesthetic appeal with robust growth. Its unique foliage and coloration make it a valuable addition to any plant collection.
