Anoectochilus is a fascinating genus of terrestrial orchids, commonly known as "jewel orchids" due to their stunning, velvety foliage adorned with intricate metallic veins. Unlike many orchids that are grown for their flowers, Anoectochilus are coveted for their spectacular leaves, making them popular among collectors and terrarium enthusiasts.

Description

  • Leaves: The hallmark of Anoectochilus is their velvety, deep green to reddish or brownish leaves, marked with striking gold, silver, or copper veins that shimmer in light—giving them a jewel-like appearance.
  • Flowers: The flowers are small, delicate, and often white or yellowish, but are less showy compared to the foliage. They typically bloom in late autumn or winter.
  • Growth Habit: Terrestrial and low-growing, these orchids often form small clumps and thrive in the leaf litter of forest floors.

Care Requirements

  • Light: Prefers low to medium, indirect light—avoid direct sun, which can scorch the leaves.
  • Humidity: Thrives in high humidity environments, making them ideal for terrariums or humidity trays.
  • Water: Keep the substrate consistently moist but never soggy. Use pure or filtered water to avoid mineral buildup.
  • Temperature: Grows best in intermediate to warm temperatures (18–28°C / 65–82°F).
  • Soil: Use a loose, well-draining, humus-rich substrate (such as a mix of sphagnum moss, fine bark, and perlite).
