Grower’s choice.

Alocasia melo, commonly known as the Alocasia Rugosa, is a compact tropical plant native to Borneo. It is celebrated for its thick, textured leaves that resemble jade green to greenish-blue, with prominent veining, giving it an almost artificial appearance. This species typically reaches a height of about 10 to 14 inches (25 to 35 cm) when grown indoors, making it suitable for small spaces.

Key Characteristics:

  • Foliage: The leaves are thick, rounded, and have a rough texture, with a deep green to blue-green color and pronounced veins.

  • Size: Compact growth habit, reaching up to 14 inches (35 cm) in height indoors.

  • Growth Habit: Grows in groups of 3-4 leaves with an overlapping base, forming a dense, shrub-like habit.

Care Requirements:

  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. Direct sunlight can scorch the leaves, so it's best to place it in a location with filtered light.

  • Soil: Requires well-draining, aerated soil. A mix of potting soil, perlite, and orchid bark is suitable.

  • Watering: Water moderately when the top 2 inches of soil become dry. Avoid overwatering, as the plant doesn't like its roots sitting in soggy soil.

  • Humidity: Thrives in high humidity. Increasing humidity to 60-70% will benefit the plant. Misting does little to increase humidity, so investing in a good humidifier is recommended.

  • Temperature: Prefers temperatures between 60°F and 85°F (16°C to 29°C). Avoid exposure to cold drafts.
